What are Chakras?

Energy is what all things are made of.

It is the air we breath, the trees and rocks, water, animals, it is what the stars and planets are made of and the space between them, it is ourselves.

Energy is always in motion in the physical and non-physical. It takes form and is altered and transformed but it is never destroyed.

Energy can be photographed and is visible to some in the form of color around the physical body. This is the aura (the energetic body) that extends outside the physical body. The different colors are combined in layers that form the aura. Each layer of the aura is associated with a major energy center in the body called a Chakra. A Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel, or vortex.  Chakras are located within our energy body along the spine and up through the head. There are seven major Chakras. These energy centers spin, pump and regulate the flow of energy through our body by drawing from the energy around us. Their ability to function efficiently is related to our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health. A healthy physical, spiritual, emotional and mental system will be in balance on all planes of being.

Each Chakra is associated with a layer of the aura which extends outward from the physical body. A Chakra is a part of a whole system and if it is not functioning properly will effect the balance of the entire system which will be most apparent on the physical plane by manifesting conditions such as distress, illness or malfunction. Each Chakra governs specific aspects of the whole. By understanding Chakras one can have a fuller picture of what is going on in the physical body. Modern western medicine is known for its treatment of symptoms and its ability to respond to a medical crisis through powerful medication and surgery. To heal the ultimate cause of a condition would involve the whole person.

Each Chakra is the energy center for different mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the individual, as well as being a connection between the physical body which it energizes. When a chakra is open, energy flows freely, back and forth between the subtle and physical bodies. If a Chakra becomes blocked for any reason the energy cannot flow to support optimum health. Energy flows from the root Chakra along the spine up through the other Chakras and out the crown Chakra.

[1] The Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine. It is the center of physical energy and vitality. It is grounded in the material and the center of manifestation. It stores our will to live. It is associated with the sense of smell, and the color red. It is also associated with the control and development of the physical body and suppplies energy to the spinal column, adrenal glands, testicles, ovaries, and Kidneys. It relates to fear, security, and survival instincts. It relates to the grounding or rooting of the physical body. When functioning properly this chakra ensures the individual’s ability to take care of themselves while respecting the needs of others and the needs of the Earth. This chakra stores Kundalini energy which is the energetic potential of the human soul sleeping within.

The Sacral Chakra (second chakra) is located two inches below the naval. It relates to friendliness, creativity, and intuition.  It is associated with the sense of taste, the tongue, the hands and the color orange. It relates to emotions, sexuality and the unconscious. Its dominant energy centers on sexuality and sensuality. It supplies the sexual organs and the immune system with energy.  It is one of the centers for empathic perception. It governs the Kidneys and lower back. An imbalanced 2nd Chakra  can manifest as feelings of a lack of self-worth and co-dependent relationships. Malfunction can cause lower back problems, frigidity, or impotence, cause Kidney, ovarian, uterine, and Urinary Bladder problems.

The Solar Plexus (third chakra) is located three inches above the naval. It relates to the sense of sight and is the body’s main distribution point for psychic energies, and the primary center for personal power and self-image. It holds the energetic patterns and blueprints for storing issues of responsibility, self-esteem, personal honor and the fear of rejection. It stores neglected emotional pain and anger. The 3rd Chakra is associated with all the organs of the digestive system and the color yellow. It supplies energy to the Liver, Gall Bladder, Stomach, Spleen, Pancreas, adrenal glands, and nervous system. When in balance the individual experiences abundant physical energy, emotional stability, a strong metabolism and constitution, as well as the ability to work efficiently and complete desired tasks. Dynamism, energy, perseverance, achievement, metabolism, and strong digestion are all positive attributes. A malfunctioning 3rd Chakra may manifest in symptoms such as poor health, depression, lack of motivation in life and inability to work or follow through. It can cause metabolic disorders, indigestion, ulcers, hypoglycemia, diabetes, disorders of the Liver and Gall Bladder, or adrenal problems.

The Heart (fourth chakra) is located at the center of the chest. This Chakra relates to the sense of touch and the color green. This energy center is associated with love, compassion, empathy, clairsentience, and intuition. It is responsible for the creative sciences and fine arts such as painting, dance, music, and poetry. It is connected with the cardiac nerve plexus and it supplies energy to the Heart, Lungs, circulatory system, thymus gland, vagus nerve, diaphragm, and upper back. A healthy 4th Chakra manifests balance and harmony in relationships, and expresses itself in such qualities as affinity, compassion and selfless action. In its positive form, the energy of the 4th Chakra manifests as creativity, spiritual love, spiritual charity, and spiritual compassion. When out of balance the energy of the 4th Chakra can manifest as the inability to feel love for oneself, which then leads to insincerity, co-dependence, insecurity, and isolation. Malfunctions can cause Heart and Lung disease.

The Throat Chakra (fifth chakra) is located at the base of the neck (the throat).  This chakra relates to the sense of hearing and its energetic color is blue. It is associated with sound vibration, personal will, divine will, and divine communication.  It is the center for clairaudience, and is also the source of the individual’s inner voice. The 5th Chakra supplies energy to the throat, thyroid and parathyroid glands, neck vertebrae, mouth, Lungs, and the digestive tube from the mouth to the anus. It relates to the ears and the vocal chords. In its positive form, the energy of the 5th Chakra manifests as self-expression and the ability to communicate one’s own truth to others clearly, honestly and directly. This Chakra is the main center for creativity, and when it is balanced one will feel enthusiasm and a genuine interest in life. When out of balance the 5th Chakra can interfere with the ability of the internal organs to release energy through the throat and arms. Energetic malfunction can cause a stiff neck, sore throat, thyroid problems, swollen glands, coughing and laryngitis.

The Brow Chakra (sixth chakra) also know as the "Third Eye" is located at the center of the forehead. This chakra relates to “mental seeing”. Its energy is responsible for seeing auras, chakras and energetic images. It is responsible for mental telepathy and psychic intuition and energy projection. It is considered the main chakra of the mind and its energetic color is indigo. Intellectual and intuitive, the 5th is the root of the plane of duality within human experience. Defining and maintaining boundaries and opposites, this is the center at which the duality of egocentric self-contraction is transcended, and the merger of the individual self with the divine self takes place.

The Crown Chakra (seventh chakra) is located at the crown. It is the doorway to the divine. It is associated with spiritual knowledge, understanding, pure intuition, and ecstasy and its color is violet. While the other Chakras are considered to be energetic transformers that modify and direct the energy contained within the spine the 7th Chakra affects the energy of the spine by controlling the flow of divine energy into the body. It is associated with totality. It relates to bliss and complete enlightenment, beyond the uppermost reaches of the human realm. When blocked the individual may feel useless or have no meaningful sense of purpose or direction in life. This is often associated with symptoms such as confusion, apathy, alienation, boredom, depression, or varying states of incomprehension. When awakened in the 7th Chakra one has access to infinite knowledge and is said to be beyond time and space.
